Work Comp Wednesday: The Ongoing Mask Debate

As of June 18, 2020, Governor Newsom announced that all Californians must wear masks while in public. He also threatened to reverse California reopening as coronavirus spreads. A few states have already reversed their openings and several have postponed moving to the next phase.

Our Overview

Until now, we at Gunnin Insurance have not weighed in on this topic, but as the debate heats up here in California and elsewhere, our advocacy and concern for our clients has motivated us to share some information. We are not pandemic disease specialists, but as risk managers our job is to stay abreast of the current climate so we may advise our clients accordingly.

In California where authorities had previously asked for voluntary compliance, an Orange County public health officer who recommended mandatory mask rules, resigned after receiving death threats. Her replacement downgraded the mandatory compliance to a “strong recommendation” according to the Los Angeles Times, but controversy remains with the Governor’s new mandatory ruling.

We at Gunnin Insurance & Risk Management Services, Inc. are your workers’ compensation advocate. We strive to promote positive outcomes for employers and employees alike. The wearing of masks in public – which also includes the workplace – is currently mandatory in the state of California, controversy aside. Things can change quickly in this environment, and we will be continue to follow the experts as they continue to shed new light on our continuing pandemic.
